PostSubject: Black-headed caique problem   Black-headed caique problem Orange2135th December 2012, 7:43 am

Hi I'm Jo & I've joined this forum as I desperately need help with my parrot.
He's a black-headed caique called Jaffa, he's 2yrs & 2mths old. I got him last New Year's Eve, he bit his last owner really hard on the face so she gave him to me.
I've had no problems with him at all until 2 months ago. I got him out & all of a sudden he flew at me & viciously bit my hand so hard he drew blood. I told him no & put him back in his cage. Since then the attacks are every time I get him out. I put a UV light on him which made him worse, he then started biting my face every time I got him out.
I took him to my vets yesterday & he had a hormone implant put in, which will probably take a week to work & it might not do anything.
I just want my lovely, friendly, comical little parrot back
Please help

hi jo and welcome to you & jaffa

i dont know alot about caiques i'm afraid. i have a grey and i know they can become hormonal and bitey around this age. was the implant a last resort and has jaffa had any kind of basic training? do you know if he was a hand reared bird or an aviary bird? sorry for all the questions but alot of info can help Smile

is there something about you that has changed that jaffa may not like?

Hi

Jaffa was hand reared & yes the implant was the last resort but has made no difference. I got Jaffa last New Year's Eve he's been so well behaved since I've had him & very loving, the lady who had him before me trained him really well so I've not really had to do much training with him at all. Nothing has changed about me at all.

Thanks

it could well be just him, trying to get the upper hand. i'm sure he will calm down given time and be back to his normal self. i'd be firm but patient and see if that works for him Smile

how long will the implant last?
